Why Are Plant Leaves Turning Yellow? Diagnosis Guide
Almost every plant owner has asked this question, and almost every answer online says "you are overwatering" — which is often true, but not always. Yellow leaves are how a plant reports many different problems. The trick is to read the pattern: which leaves, how fast, and what the soil feels like. Work through this guide in order before changing anything else.
First check: soil, drainage, light (2 minutes)
- Soil: push a finger 2–3 cm in. Soggy? Overwatering is the prime suspect. Bone dry and the pot feels light? Underwatering.
- Drainage: does the pot have holes, and is the saucer empty? A pot without drainage turns every watering into a flood.
- Light: has the plant moved recently, or has the season changed? Winter sun is weaker and lower — a spot that was bright in summer may be dim now.
If any of these three is wrong, fix that first. Most yellow-leaf cases end here.
Read the pattern: what the yellowing tells you
| Pattern | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Oldest, lowest leaves only, slowly | Natural ageing | Normal — trim them; worry only if it spreads fast |
| Soft yellow leaves + wet soil | Overwatering / root rot starting | Stop watering, let soil dry, check drainage; remove mushy parts |
| Dry, crispy edges + dry soil | Underwatering | Water deeply once, then resume a regular check routine |
| Pale yellow all over + leggy growth | Too little light | Move to brighter indirect light gradually |
| Yellow between green veins | Nutrient imbalance (often iron/magnesium) | Feed lightly with compost; do not overdose fertiliser |
| Yellow spots + tiny insects underneath | Pests (aphids, mealybugs, mites) | Isolate, wipe leaves, treat as per our pest guide |
| Sudden yellowing after repotting/moving | Shock | Leave it alone in stable light and water; it usually recovers |
Mistakes that make it worse
- Fertilising a stressed plant. Fertiliser on damaged roots burns them further. Fix water and light first; feed only when new growth appears.
- Changing everything at once. New pot, new spot, new water routine on the same day — then you never learn what worked.
- Cutting all yellow leaves immediately. A partly yellow leaf still feeds the plant. Remove only fully yellow or mushy leaves.
- Assuming one cause for all plants. A money plant and a succulent yellow for opposite reasons — check each plant separately.
When to worry — and when not to
Do not worry: one or two old leaves yellowing slowly on an otherwise healthy plant. Do worry: rapid yellowing across many leaves, soft stems, a smell from the soil, or yellowing that keeps spreading after you fixed water and light. In that case, unpot and inspect the roots — white/tan roots are alive, black mushy roots are rot; trim the rot, repot in fresh dry mix, and water sparingly until recovery.
Frequently asked questions
Should I remove yellow leaves? Only fully yellow or mushy ones. Partly green leaves still photosynthesise.
Can yellow leaves turn green again? No — a fully yellow leaf will not recover. Aim for healthy new growth instead.
Is it always overwatering? No, but it is the most common cause indoors, especially in winter when plants drink less. Check the soil before anything else.
Do I need a special medicine or spray? Almost never as a first step. Water, drainage and light fix most cases; sprays are for confirmed pests.
My plant yellowed after I moved it — did I kill it? Probably shock. Keep conditions stable, water correctly, and give it 2–3 weeks.
