White Fungus on Plant Soil: Harmless or Harmful?

White fuzz on the soil surface is one of the most common worries for indoor gardeners — and in most cases it is the least dangerous thing in the pot. It is usually a saprophytic mould: a fungus feeding on dead organic matter in the mix, not on your plant. But "usually" is not "always", so here is how to tell, what to do, and how to prevent it.

Harmless or harmful? The 30-second check

Fix it in minutes

  1. Scrape off the top 1–2 cm of affected mix and discard it (do not compost it back into the same pot).
  2. Let the surface dry: hold off watering until the top soil dries — mould needs constant damp to survive.
  3. Improve airflow: move the pot where air circulates; crowded, still, humid corners are mould's favourite habitat.
  4. Top up with fresh mix and resume watering by the soil test, not the calendar.

If the fuzz returns within days despite drying, repot into fresh, free-draining mix (our potting-mix guide) and check that the pot drains — persistent mould usually means the mix stays wet too long.

Frequently asked questions

Is white mould dangerous for my family? Ordinary soil surface mould in small amounts is a normal part of soil biology. If anyone in the home has severe mould allergies or respiratory illness, remove affected mix promptly and keep pots well-ventilated — and ask a doctor, not a gardening blog, about health concerns.

Should I spray fungicide? Almost never needed for surface mould. Drying, airflow and fresh mix solve it; sprays treat the symptom while the wet conditions remain.

Does cinnamon work? It is a popular home remedy, but evidence for it as a soil treatment is weak. Drying and airflow are the reliable fixes.

Will it kill my seedlings? Seedlings are more vulnerable to damping-off (a different, serious problem) than to surface mould. If seedlings collapse at the stem base, that is damping-off — improve airflow, reduce watering, and start fresh in clean mix.

Why does it appear in winter? Less light, slower evaporation, and continued watering at summer frequency keep the surface damp. Cut watering in winter first.
