3 Watering Myths Killing Your Indoor Plants
Most watering problems begin with a good intention applied without observation. A plant’s thirst changes with light, temperature, leaf area, pot size, mix and season. The same plant can dry in three days beside a bright window and remain wet for ten days in a dim room.
Myth 1: Water every day
A fixed daily schedule keeps many indoor mixes continuously wet. Push a finger two to three centimetres into the mix, feel the pot’s weight and notice whether leaves are firm or soft. Water only when the plant and its root zone are ready.
Myth 2: A small sip is safer
Repeated surface sips can leave the lower root ball dry while the top stays damp. When watering is due, wet the root zone evenly until some water exits the drainage hole, then empty the saucer. A pot without drainage needs a different container—not more cautious guessing.
Myth 3: Wilting always means thirst
Wilt can also follow waterlogged roots, heat, root damage or sudden exposure to stronger light. If the mix is wet and the plant is drooping, do not add more water. Check for blocked drainage, a sour smell or mushy roots.
A simple recovery sequence
- Pause and inspect the mix at more than one point.
- Move the pot into bright, indirect light with gentle airflow.
- Remove standing water and confirm the hole is open.
- Repot only if the mix is failing or roots are rotting.
