Tulsi: The Complete Care Guide

Tulsi is generous when its basic conditions are right: sun, drainage and active pruning. It struggles when kept permanently indoors, watered on autopilot or allowed to flower continuously while the plant becomes woody and sparse.

Sunlight: brighter than a typical room

Give tulsi several hours of direct sun—morning sun is especially useful in hot climates. A bright balcony or terrace usually works better than an indoor table. If moving a plant into stronger light, acclimatise it over several days to avoid scorch.

Watering rhythm

Water deeply when the upper layer begins to dry, then let excess escape. In summer this may be frequent; in Delhi winter it can be much less. Never let the pot stand in a saucer of water. Droop in wet soil calls for inspection, not another watering.

Pinch the manjari for a bushier plant

Once flower spikes—the manjari—begin forming, pinch them above a healthy pair of leaves if your goal is continued leafy growth. Also pinch soft shoot tips regularly. This redirects growth into side branches and keeps the plant compact. Use clean fingers or snips and never remove a large share of the canopy at once.

Delhi winter protection

Cold slows tulsi dramatically. Place the pot where it receives maximum winter sun and shelter from harsh night wind. Reduce watering because the mix dries more slowly. If a cold night is expected, move a portable pot closer to a protected wall or indoors overnight, then return it to light during the day.

Pot and soil

Use an open drainage hole and an airy mix that holds some moisture without remaining soggy. Refresh compacted topsoil with mature compost, but avoid feeding a stressed or waterlogged plant.
