The Perfect Potting Mix: 3 DIY Recipes

A potting mix must hold the plant, hold enough moisture and still leave air around roots. Garden soil alone often compacts in containers; pure cocopeat can stay wetter than expected. Build a balanced base, then adjust after observing how fast it dries.

Recipe 1: Indoor foliage

1 part sieved garden soil + 1 part buffered cocopeat + 1 part mature vermicompost. Add a drainage component such as coarse sand, perlite or small bark if the mix stays wet in your conditions. Use less compost for sensitive or slow-growing plants.

Recipe 2: Outdoor balcony pots

2 parts garden soil + 1 part cocopeat + 1 part mature vermicompost. This heavier mix offers stability outdoors. In a rainy, humid location, reduce cocopeat or add more coarse drainage material. In a hot, windy terrace, a little more moisture retention may help.

Recipe 3: Succulents and cacti

1 part garden soil + 1 part compost + 2 parts mineral drainage material such as coarse sand, perlite, pumice or fine gravel. The finished mix should shed water quickly and not collapse into mud.

Test before planting

Wet a handful. It should hold briefly when squeezed, then crumble with a touch rather than stay as a sticky ball. Fill one test pot, water thoroughly and watch how quickly excess drains. Never add a gravel “drainage layer” to compensate for a blocked hole—keep the mix consistent and the exit open.

Use mature, earthy-smelling compost. Fresh manure or unfinished compost can heat, smell and injure roots.
