Pet-Safe Indoor Plants for Indian Homes
“Pet-safe” should mean the plant is widely listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs—not that it is a snack. Chewing leaves can still cause choking, stomach upset, pesticide exposure or damage from sharp pot edges. Place every plant with the animal’s habits in mind.
Four useful choices
- Areca palm: a bright-room palm that appreciates filtered light and an evenly managed root zone.
- Parlor palm: slower growing and more tolerant of moderate indoor light, but not a dark-corner plant.
- Calathea: decorative foliage that prefers bright indirect light, warmth and more even moisture.
- Spider plant: adaptable, arching and easy to propagate; hang it securely if the trailing plantlets invite play.
Placement is part of safety
Use stable, heavy-based planters. Keep hanging pots beyond a jumping route and secure saucers so they cannot be pulled down. Avoid loose decorative stones that could be swallowed. If a pet repeatedly chews plants, move them out of reach instead of testing tolerance.
Check the exact plant
Common names can be confusing. Confirm the botanical identity when buying, especially for palms and plants sold under broad names. Recheck any pesticide, leaf-shine product or fertiliser separately—the plant’s toxicity status does not cover what has been sprayed onto it.
