October Planting Guide for Delhi Balconies
October is a hinge month in Delhi. Monsoon humidity begins to loosen its grip, nights become gentler and many balconies receive usable sun without peak-summer punishment. It is a good sowing window—but only after you check what the rains left behind.
Reset before you sow
Empty saucers, clear every drainage hole and remove fallen leaves that are decomposing against stems. If the mix smells sour, stays wet for days or has collapsed into a dense block, replace it. Otherwise, loosen only the upper few centimetres and add a modest layer of mature compost. Disturbing healthy roots just because the calendar changed creates unnecessary stress.
What to sow now
Leafy crops give beginners the fastest reward. Sow methi, coriander, spinach and lettuce in wide containers. Radish needs depth and even moisture; peas need a sunny edge and support from day one. For coriander, gently split the paired seed fruits before sowing and keep the surface evenly moist until germination.
Map the balcony light
Observe where direct sun falls at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. Fruiting vegetables and peas deserve the brightest zone. Leafy greens tolerate less intense light but still need a genuinely bright position. Rotate containers only if one side is stretching noticeably; constant rearrangement makes care harder to read.
Change the watering rhythm
Cooler air means pots often dry more slowly. Check beneath the surface instead of watering on a fixed date. Water thoroughly when needed, then let excess drain. Seed trays need more even moisture than established plants, so check them separately.
